FAQ

Will I have to do an exam or test?

No, there is no exam but you need to complete the full course to become a Mental Health First Aider or Champion.

Is there group work involved?

Yes, group work is a part of the course. Groups are always small and you will only need to be involved at a level that you feel comfortable with.

Will I be required to speak to the whole class or ‘be picked on’?

We never single anybody out and whilst group work is a part of the course, your contribution is completely voluntary.

Is there a crossover with physical first aid (as anxiety attacks etc. can bring on physical symptoms)? Do I need any previous mental or physical health training?

You’re absolutely right, mental ill health can cause physical health symptoms. We acknowledge this on the course, but we focus on Mental Health First Aid which in turn can help relieve the symptoms. We do not cover Physical First Aid and you do not require any previous training or experience in mental or physical health training. One of our trainers does provide Physical First Aid courses, please contact RecoverMe if you would like further details on this.

Is this course open to students? Is there an age limit?

The adult courses are open to any person aged 16 years and over, this includes students.

Will this course be useful/adaptable for both home and work life?

Absolutely.

Will I receive a Mental Health First Aider certificate? How long is this valid?

Yes, you will receive your certificate electronically direct from MHFA England. This can sometimes take several weeks. If you have not heard within 28 days from MHFA England, please do not hesitate to contact me.

How often do I need to do a MHFA course? Are there refresher courses?

At the moment, there is no requirement to do an update. However, it is my understanding MHFA are introducing refresher courses in the near future.

What if I need to cancel/I am unwell on training days or one of the days?

If you are not able to attend any of the training, you may nominate someone to take your place at no additional cost. Alternatively, you can reschedule to a later date. If you are only able to attend part of the course, then we would offer the opportunity to complete the course at a later date. Unfortunately, you cannot receive your certificate until the training is fully completed. Please see our refund policy for further details.

Do I need to be working in mental health or with vulnerable adults? Do I need any prior knowledge?

No, Mental Health First Aid is suitable for everyone regardless of occupation, experience or knowledge. All we ask is that you have a genuine interest.

Why be a Mental Health First Aider?

Have you seen the film We Bought A Zoo? If you have, you will get the question ‘why not?’ We all appreciate the importance of being able to assist someone in a physical first aid crisis or difficulty. Mental health first aid is no different.

Is it effective?

MHFA England have an excellent website which I am sure you will find really helpful with lots of information and feedback from organisations which have implemented it into their health and well-being strategies.
